Who Will Demonstrate Overcoming Sin and Propensities by God's Power?
The Bible and the writings of Ellen G. White teach that God's faithful people, especially in the last days, will demonstrate victory over sin through His power. This victory is not achieved by human strength but through faith in Christ and the working of the Holy Spirit.
1. Christ as Our Example
Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of overcoming sin. He lived on earth in human form and overcame every temptation by relying completely on His Father.
Hebrews 4:15 – "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin."
John 8:29 – "And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him."
"Christ came to this world to show that by receiving power from on high, man can live an unsullied life."
(The Desire of Ages, p. 311)
2. The 144,000 – A Last-Day People Who Overcome Sin
The Bible describes a group of people in the last days who will reflect Christ’s character fully. These are the 144,000, who follow the Lamb wherever He goes and have no deceit in their mouths.
Revelation 14:5 – "And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God."
"Now, while our great High Priest is making the atonement for us, we should seek to become perfect in Christ. Not even by a thought could our Savior be brought to yield to the power of temptation. … This is the condition in which those must be found who shall stand in the time of trouble."
(The Great Controversy, p. 623)
3. Overcoming Propensities to Sin
Sinful tendencies and propensities (our natural inclinations to sin) can be overcome through Christ’s power. Though we are born with sinful natures, God gives victory through the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:13 – "For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live."
Philippians 4:13 – "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."
"The Lord requires at this time just what He required of Adam in Eden—perfect obedience to the law of God. We must have that perfection and character which will meet the approval of God."
(Selected Messages, Vol. 3, p. 135)
Conclusion
Those who fully surrender to Christ, especially in the last days, will demonstrate victory over sin. By faith, obedience, and reliance on God’s power, they will reflect Christ’s character perfectly. This includes the 144,000, but also all who seek holiness through Christ.
