Sabbath School Teaching Tutorial from Bible & SOP

  • Why teach?
    • Go ye therefore, and teach all nations .. Matthew 28:19
    • And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings. Rev 10:11
    • Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy 1 Cor 14:1
    • Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy 1 Cor 14:39
  • Why read all verses?
    • And he[Jesus] came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. Luke 4:16
    • One sentence of Scripture is of more value than ten thousand of man's ideas or arguments.--7T 71. {PM 292.4}
      • then our ideas are a waste of time compared to even one bible verse
      • 10,000 x better to read bible than make a speech
  • Why read all all EGW?
    • proven prophet. more reliable than us/me/you. she has passed the biblical tests of a true prophet.
    • "Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper." 2 Chronicles 20:20
  • Why make text big?
    • "And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it." Habakkuk 2:2
  • Why full lesson instead of  lesson summary?
    • Worthy of Long Service The Sabbath school should be a place where the jewels of truth are searched for and rescued from their environment of error, and placed in their true setting in the framework of the gospel. Precious gems of truth, long lost sight of, are now to be restored to the children of God. The themes of justification by faith, the righteousness of Christ, should be presented in our schools, that the youth and children may understand these important subjects, and teachers and scholars may know the way of salvation. Sacred and eternal principles connected with the plan of salvation have long been lost from sight, but they must be restored to their proper place in the plan 13 of salvation, and made to appear in their heavenly light, and penetrate the moral darkness in which the world is enshrouded. {CSW 12.2}
    • The Lord calls for young men and women to gird themselves for lifelong, earnest labor in the Sabbath school work. Spasmodic [
      occurring or done in brief, irregular bursts
      ] efforts will not avail to accomplish much good, or to make you successful laborers in the work of God. By patient continuance in well-doing, you are to become laborers together with God. You are to reckon yourselves the servants of God by the day. Be diligent in your work for one day, and see that you make no crooked paths for your feet, lest the lame be turned out of the path of rectitude by your misdoings.—Testimonies on Sabbath-School Work, 52, 53. {CSW 13.2}
    • Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:20
    • to avoid backsliding
      • difference between fruitful and those who will backslide is "understanding of the Word". Matthew 13 parable of the sower.
        • When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. Matthew 13:19
        • But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Matthew 13:23
  • Why put many verses?
    learning pyramid (if it is true)
    10 verses X 5% = half a verse
    100 verses X 5% = 5 verses
    the more you put, the more they remember

  • Why some verses are repeated more than once in the presentation?
    • repetition in the Bible - for emphasis of important things. more redundancy = more reliability.
    • Matthew, Mark, John, Luke - many same stories.
      • why not summarize the Bible? - because "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" 2 Timothy 3:16
  • Why fast paced?
    • short attention span of people (kids = few seconds, young = few minutes)
    • not waste of time. time is short. stewardship of time. efficiency. should not be boring.
      • "Time is short, and our forces must be organized to do a larger work."--Id., Vol. IX, p. 27. {PH120 26.3
      • "Because time is short, we should work with diligence and double energy." 3T 159 (1872). {LDE 36.4}
    • Enthusiasm in Things Real and Imaginary—On a certain occasion, when Betterton, the celebrated actor, was dining with Dr. Sheldon, archbishop of Canterbury, the archbishop said to him, “Pray, Mr. Betterton, tell me why it is that you actors affect your audiences so powerfully by speaking of things imaginary.” {VSS 227.1}
      “My lord,” replied Betterton, “with due submission to Your Grace, permit me to say that the reason is plain: It all lies in the power of enthusiasm. We on the stage speak of things imaginary as if they were real, and you in the pulpit speak of things real as if they were imaginary.”—Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, 255. {VSS 227.2}
  • Perseverance and Enthusiasm
    • Proportionate Success When God opens the way for the accomplishment of a certain work, and gives assurance of success, the chosen instrumentality must do all in his power to bring about the promised result. In proportion to the enthusiasm and perseverance with which the work is carried forward, will be the success given.--Prophets and Kings, p. 263. {ChS 262.2}
  • Prayer of repentance before starting
    • Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38
    • But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:26
  • Dependence on God
    • we don't know what the audience needs, but God does
    • we don't know what the enemy is planning, but God does
    • we don't know the future, but God does
    • the work is bigger than us
    • the great controversy is too complicated for us
    • we need God's leading where to efficiently spend our limited energy, attention span, attitude, and time on
