-help people (understand: 1) what they are trying to do {goals}, 2. what they are doing {current system}, 3. why they do things that way {goals & constraints})

-look for parts of the work w/c can be improved by computers

-look for available solutions (review of related literature/products/projects)

-if no available solution is feasible OR you think you can make a better solution

-write a plan how to make the solution, get it approved by the thesis adviser / research funder

-make the program (full software engineering process)

-explain how the program works (discussion)

-publish publishable parts of the thesis
