Prophesy, Prophetic Gift, Prophecy, Prophet - Cautions and Promotions

Cautions

  • have to be accurate. "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them."
    Isaiah 8:20
  • punishment for false prophets is death"If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, 'Let us follow other gods' (gods you have not known) 'and let us worship them,' you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. That prophet or dreamer must be put to deathbecause he preached rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery; he has tried to turn you from the way the Lord your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you" (Deuteronomy 13:1–5 NIV).
  • "But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death." Deu 18:20
  • listening to false prophets - disaster
"'So now the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster for you'" (1 Kings 22:19–23NIV).
  • false prophets in the end of time (Mat 24)
4And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
11And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
14And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
  • message affirmed by others. Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. (2 Peter 1:20)
  • do not contradict other prophets
"And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets." (1 Cor 14:32)
"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." (Matthew 5:17)
